League report - 22nd January 2012

Occidentals hold leaders to a draw !

Fresh from their 6-0 win last week, Vagabonds must have been hoping for more of the same today when they hosted Occidentals who were third at the start of the day. Occidentals however were determined this would not happen and they won both the first doubles; Maggie and Tony Allchurch coming back from 0-9 down to win 13-10!

Vagabonds fought back in the reverse doubles, though it was close with Jeremy Grigg and Helene Retrosi only beating Joy and Derek Hart 13-12.

The single was between the current and former Island singles champions Jeremy Grigg and Tony Allchurch and it was Tony who was victor. The home triple had a convincing 13-3 win in the triple to split the points with a draw.

Second placed Jolly Hocquers had their by this week giving either Taylormade or Grantez a chance to catch them but it was not to be. With honours even after the four doubles games, Grantez took the triple and their captain Keith Pinel came from 11-12 down to snatch the single and thus clinching the win.

The clash between the bottom two teams ended in a draw, which in did not help the plight of either team.

There are now three teams all on 9 points with Jolly Hocquers having the superior games difference and a game in hand.

The leaders of the second division also faced each other today but the result of this match is not in.

The outstanding result of Les Hirondelles was draw and this edged them ahead of Penguins on games difference. The two teams met today and were one each after the first doubles. Jenny Turner, playing for Penguins for the first time in the league placed well, but Les Hirondelles still took the both games in the reverse doubles. Phyllis Saunders had a tough single against Lawrence Rondel but grabbed the win with 2 points in the final end to win 13-12. Les Hirondelles triple however proved too strong for their opponents and their win gave an overall 4-2 and moves them into third place.

Wednesday Mob hosted Wrinkleys and were held to a draw, but this point was enough to lift them above the Penguins into fourth place.

The third division saw leaders Firing Squad back on form with a 5-1 win over Just Us.  The ‘local derby’ between St Mary’s and Fleur de Lys saw Fleur win the first two double only for their opponents to level the score by winning the next two. The two captains faced each other in the single with Ken Le Brun (Fleur de Lys) beating Robin Stockton (St Mary’s) and the triple went to the wire with Fleur getting the vital point to win 13-12 and moving up to third.

Division three leaders Lethal Limbs had their bye this week and have seen the Firing Squad move back above them for the present.

A full schedule of matches is to be played next Sunday 29th January.
