In the pouring rain, Jersey were victorious in today’s Inter Insular with a resounding 30-18 win against Guernsey and have levelled the overall tally at 12 wins a piece.

This was the 25th annual inter Island challenge and Jersey have now won for the past three years.

Four games were played by each of the 12 doubles teams representing each side. Jersey started well winning 8 games to 4 in the first round. The second round was much closer with Jersey increasing their lead slightly with 7 wins to Guernsey’s 5.

At the lunch break Jersey were therefore 6 games ahead and by now the terrains were water-logged! The play was moved to the adjacent terrain for the afternoon sessions.

The suspense grew as the third round results came in and this time the Islands were equal at 6 games all – everyone having to get adjusted to the new area.

However, Jersey did not let go of their lead and won the final round 9 games to 3 thus sealing retaining the trophy for another year.

Four of the Jersey pairs were unbeaten; Tommie Glennie and Lawrence Rondel, Matt Ryan and Marc Nicol, Lyndon Lewis and Ron Le Herissier and Toby Northern and Robert Birch. Dorothy and Gordon de Gruchy won three of their four.

Seven of the Guernsey teams won 2 of their games and the best of these were Vikki Le Poidevin and Seb Rebours and John Bartlet and Fred Wallnofer each with a net +5.

The JPA would like to thank all the helpers and the Jersey Petanque Club for the use of their facilities for the event.
