2010
INTERNATIONAL EVENT

This inaugural International Competition was a resounding success – even the weather was perfect!
Best of all was that both the Jersey teams beat both Ireland and Scotland over the course of the weekend. The event also established the JPA as a competent entity who can now look at moving on towards overseas competition. Generous sponsorship from both Helm Trust and Normans, the Jersey Anthem sung by our own Sadie Rennard and music on the bagpipes by Michael Cowan all added to making this a great occasion.
Well done to all the Jersey team players and in particular Marc Nicol, Matthew Pinel and Jeremy Grigg who beat everyone in their path - a fantastic achievement! Lawrence, Mick and Ian Rondel were also very successful winning 8 of their 12 games.
A credit to the selectors too, as their selections for Jersey 1 were top, with Jersey 2 in second place. Scotland were third and Ireland forth. Well done to Joan and Dennis Le Mercier and Linda Taylor who clinched second for Jersey 2 by winning the deciding game!
And most importantly, ‘thank you’ to everyone who helped in any way to make this event such a success and ensure our guest players had a great weekend. Without you all, these important events would never happen!
Inter Insular 2010
Jersey once again won the Inter Insular played in Guernsey on Saturday 17th July. The result was Jersey 31 games to Guernsey’s 17 and Jersey are now only one behind in wins overall!

Island Champions 2010
Two of the three Island Champions for 2010 are now decided.
Congratulations to Dorothy and Gordon de Gruchy who became the first to retain a title, winning again the Magic Touch doubles in fine style.
Tony Allchurch played well throughout the Magic Touch singles and for his finale, he beat holder Matthew Pinel in the final to become the 2010 Island Singles champion. ![]()
The JPA Cup
The two teams for the final are now known: Vagabonds will take on Taylormade on Thursday 19th August, each trying to become the Cup winners for the first time! A word for third division’s Kerplunk who came so close to being the ‘Giant Killers’ as they drew 3-3 in their semi against Vagabonds only to lose out 54 points to 61! A great effort by Ross Payne and his team!
It would be great to see lots of members at the CUP FINAL to support the teams and make this a real occasion. Can you recall who won in 2008 or 2009? Answer at the bottom of this newsletter!
The Magic Touch summer leagues
The three divisions are all closely contested this season, with perhaps, just division three showing two teams who are likely to win promotion – Kerplunk and Wrinkleys – both vying for the trophy!
Sadly, this division is one team down as while Beeches Old Boules were keen to rejoin, they were limited with some players being away at University and were unable to field teams in the first half of the season. To be fair to all, the committee felt they had no option but to exclude them from this Summer season. We certainly hope to see them again in the future.
Les Hirondelles are looking good for promotion in division two, but Occidentals will be keen to challenge them for the trophy and none of the end of season moves are certain as yet! One or two good results can whiz teams up (or down) the table!
Again, it would seem that the title in division one will go to Vagabonds or Grantez, who are determined to do all they can to snatch if from them! One slip by either team could be very costly! With 5 matches still to play, only 2 points separate the remaining 5 teams so every point will be vital to avoid relegation! A very exciting season!
Inter Club competition
This will be held on Saturday 14th August at the Weighbridge. Teams from Carrefour PC, Jersey PC, St Mary’s PC and also from the Condor lunch time leagues will take part. Further details can be obtained from your Clubs (or from Tony Allchurch who is liaising for the Condor league team).
Juniors.
This year’s Junior championship is under way with four of the rounds already completed. It has been a little disappointing that the numbers are down this year, but those who are taking part are enjoying it and benefiting from the coaching challenges set for them by Fred Paisnel. This is evident in the enthusiasm of the players and the close competition we now see.

Rules update:
Changes have recently been made to the rules governing the game of petanque (14-11-2008)
Copies of the updated rules can be obtained from the website of the F.I.P.J.P. It is probable the individual clubs will also have copies which you can purchase.
Having played in several games in the past few weeks, it is obvious that many people are not yet aware of the rule changes. As the Chairman of the JPA Coaches and Umpires committee I feel that it is important that players are made aware of such changes. If you are playing in any competition organised by the JPA you will be expected to comply with these rules.
Major Change to rule.
Filling in the marks or indentations made by boule:
When it is your team’s turn to play you may fill in any one mark or indentation made by a previously thrown boule – not just the last boule. You are not permitted to fill in more than one and you should not smooth out the terrain between ends. You should, however, eliminate the circle at the finish of each end. This should help to avoid playing from the wrong circle.
I will highlight some of the other changes to the rules in the next newsletter. Meanwhile, why not get a copy of the rules and read them. Remember: not all situations are covered by the rules and it is up to the Umpire of the day to interpret the rules and make a decision based on their knowledge and experience. Derek Hart.
Hot off the press!!
Magic Touch have just taken delivery of lots of new stock from Obut, so now is a perfect time to go along to buy new boules and/or equipment or to replace anything you need!
If you have any questions about any of the above or anything else please contact one of the committee or your club representative.
